Son, I want to tell you more about the person we really celebrate Christmas for. Nothing was ever easy for Jesus. Heck, he was born in a small barn type structure called a manger. This is usually a place the animals stay, not a place for the son of God. Jesus was tested in many ways during his time here on earth. God didn’t make it “easy street” for him like he could have. He was tortured, persecuted, and later killed. There was a reason why God chose this path for his son.
Here are a few examples of how Jesus was tested. Early on in his adult life, Jesus was sent into the wilderness to live for 40 days and 40 nights. He went without eating for the 40 days he was in that wilderness and was very hungry. Jesus was then visited by the devil. He tempted Jesus by saying “If you are the son of God, tell these stones to become bread”. Jesus refused, instead saying: “man can’t live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.
Next, the devil took Jesus to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. Again the devil said: “if you are the son of God, jump off. God will surely send his Angels to catch you before your feet hit the ground”. Jesus fought off temptation and told the devil “it is written, do not put the Lord your God to the test”.
Finally, the devil took Jesus to the very top of the highest mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and how beautiful they were. “I will give you all of this if you just bow down and worship me” said the devil. Jesus again passed the test saying “get away from me Satan! For it is written that we must worship the Lord our God and serve him only”.
God tested his son because he wanted to show mankind that Jesus was different. He wanted to show everyone that Jesus was the “true” son of God.
I have been tempted and failed the test many times. The same will happen to you, there is no doubt about that. Jesus was the only one on this earth that was always able to avoid temptation and never went against God’s words and commandments.
Could you image going without food for 40 days and then having someone come to you offering the best looking pizza you ever saw in your life? If the condition you needed to meet to enjoy that pizza was denying God, would you be able to resist? Now, imagine what Jesus went through in that wilderness.
What if you were shown the keys to your favorite skateboard shop and were told it is all yours if you just stop going to church. Would you do it? Jesus turned down all the riches and spoils of the earth that the devil offered him.
You see, God wanted Jesus to walk the earth as a human being so the people could watch, feel, and relate to him. One thing was clear though, he was nothing like anyone else. He proved this by avoiding the temptation so many others around him could not resist.
This is just a few of the many reasons why Jesus was so special. This is just a part of the life of the son of God. Please remember why it is so important we always think about the life of Jesus, especially this time of year. (You can read the full story in Matthew Chapter 4 of the Bible.)
I love you son! I bet now you won’t feel as deprived when I make you go to bed hungry because you didn’t eat all your dinner.
James 1:2-4: Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
