The real reason…

The Real Reason

Son,

“Jesus is the reason for the season”.  I am sure you have heard this expression before, but you and your generation need to understand that nothing else matters more than this.

Because that child was born in the city of Bethlehem, we received a gift unlike any other.  It’s the best gift anyone will ever give you.  No IPod, bike, or skateboard of yours even comes close.  This gift it free, you can’t return it, and you will use it your entire life.

That amazing gift is salvation.  When Jesus was born and later died for us, it ensured that all who believe in him will have everlasting life.  You and I will get to hang out much longer than just our time together here on earth.

You must believe!  We must change what most think Christmas is all about.  Retailers are opening on Thanksgiving day to entice people to come in early and buy a bunch of stuff for Christmas.  Families are going into debt just to make sure their loved ones have the new “best thing” out here.  There is nothing wrong with decorating and buying presents for those you love, but you have to put things in their proper perspective.

Look at our house right now, we just decorated.  What do you see that honors Jesus and the monumental impact his birth has had on all our lives………not much.  There is Santa, elves, snowmen, and reindeer, but there is hardly anything indicating the real reason we celebrate.  How can we start to change that?  What can we do to bring Jesus to the forefront in our home?  What can I do to help instill this “Jesus first” mentality during the holiday season?

I grew up pretty spoiled, especially this time of year.  My birthday and Jesus’ birthday fall within 4 days of each other.  I got everything I ever wanted for presents.  I knew why we celebrated Christmas, but I was thinking little about Jesus as I rode my new bike around the block.  I looked at what I received, not why or how I actually got it.  I wasn’t a bad kid, I was just misguided.

What happened that day Jesus was born set in a place a chain of events that would change our lives forever.  Before he was born, it would have been nearly impossible for us to get to heaven.  Jesus dying on the cross for our sins gave us the opportunity we needed.  We can now spend eternity with him and those we love.

Think of the most magical place you could ever imagine.  Heaven is even better than that!  This is why we have to put Jesus first and remember the gifts, decorations, food, and holiday parties are all just ways to celebrate his birth.

Love you son,

Dad

Matthew 1:21

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
